Wacky Watermelon Wednesday

Today was Wacky Watermelon Wednesday and most of our lessons were geared around a watermelon.  Thank you to David and Abel, whose families kindly donated a watermelon for our lesson today!

During the day I discussed how a watermelon is a plant that grows from a seed, into a vine with flowers, that when pollinated will slowly change into a watermelon. This fits in great with this week's science lesson about the needs and parts of a plant.
Then the got to feel and hold the watermelon.  We discussed describing words to tell what it felt like.  Then they estimated how much it weighed.  Both watermelons weighed about 13 pounds each even though some estimates came in as 5, 10 and even 100 pounds.

Then the young students were artists as they painted a picture of it for the cover of their booklet.  They drew what the watermelon looked like on the inside and outside.  I had them do a couple of worksheets about the sound of Ww and how to write it.  We sang a rhyming song about watermelons called "Down by the Bay" and did a lesson on rhyming, which is another skills that they needed for the week.

Together we made up a story about a Willie and Winnie the Watermelon and their exciting day at the beach.  Then I put all of their activities including a photo of the group in a booklet for you to see.

At the end of the day, the kindergartners watched me cut open the watermelon and then they could eat as much as they wanted.  Some of them sure ate a lot!

This is my favorite kind of teaching!  I like having a theme and then building lessons around it.  It was a fun day and they  sure learned a lot from a watermelon!
